South Africa Introduces Online Traveller Declarations for Everyone Entering or Leaving the Country
South Africa has introduced a new online traveller declaration requirement for people entering or leaving the country.
The system became effective from 1 July 2026 and applies to travellers using air, land, sea and rail ports of entry.
WHO MUST COMPLETE THE DECLARATION?
In general, people entering or leaving South Africa must submit a traveller declaration.
This includes:
• South African citizens
• South African residents
• Foreign travellers
• People travelling through South African ports of entry
A parent, legal guardian, caretaker or another assisting person may complete the declaration on behalf of a minor or someone who cannot complete it themselves.
WHAT INFORMATION IS DECLARED?
The traveller declaration allows travellers to declare goods in their possession, including currency, before travelling.
Travellers can use the available digital channels to complete their declarations.
HOW CAN TRAVELLERS COMPLETE THE DECLARATION?
Travellers can use:
• The SARS Customs Online Traveller Declaration Portal
• The SATMS mobile application
• Scan-to-Declare QR codes
Travellers are encouraged to complete their declaration before arriving at a port of entry to help make the process easier and faster.
WHAT IF YOU DID NOT COMPLETE IT BEFORE TRAVELLING?
Travellers will not be denied entry into or departure from South Africa solely because they did not complete the declaration before arriving at a port of entry.
SARS Customs officials and self-service declaration terminals are available to assist travellers who were unable to submit their declarations beforehand.
